Cars on fire and collisions on two highways in Romania as travelers return from mini-Easter holiday

07 May 2013

Several incidents involving cars took place on Monday, May 6, on two overcrowded highways in Romania as Romanians returned to Bucharest from the seaside and the mountains, where they spent the mini Easter holiday.

A car burst into flames on the Sun Highway, connecting Bucharest to the seaside city of Constanta. Nobody was hurt, as the driver and the passengers managed to get out of the car before it was completely engulfed by the fire. Traffic on the Constanta – Bucharest lane was stopped for half an hour until the firefighters put out the blaze. A fault in the car's electrical systems caused the fire, according to reports.

Other incidents happened on the A1 highway, connecting Pitesti to Bucharest on Monday afternoon. Four cars collided, causing minor injuries to three people. Another separate incident involved a car which also caught fire. A specialized unit put out the fire in about 20 minutes, but the car was damaged beyond repair, and the driver said he did not have full CASCO insurance.
