01 November 2018

Romania’s Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday, October 31, a bill that establishes the King Michael I Institution, which should get state funding worth EUR 860,000 each year.

The law was adopted tacitly as it passed the legal deadline for debate and vote. It will move to the Senate, which has the last vote on this project, local Mediafax reported.

According to the bill, the King Michael I Institution will have its headquarters at the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest, which it will take over from the Government.

The institution’s activity includes creating and developing projects and programs to promote traditions, national symbols, people and achievements in science, culture, education, sports and business. It also promotes Romania’s image abroad.

The director of this institution is proposed by the Crown Custodian, Princess Margareta, and voted by the Parliament. The institution also has to present yearly activity reports to the Parliament.

King Michael I, Romania’s last sovereign, who ruled until December 1947, died in December 2017 at the age of 96. Princess Margareta, his eldest daughter, is now the Custodian of the Crown of Romania and the head of the Romanian Royal Family.
