Charity 1,000 km mega running/cycling duathlon invites endurance fanatics to race Bucharest - Sofia and back

04 November 2012

The charity mega marathon “1,000Balkan Charity Challenge” will be held between November 10 and 19 to raise funds for 10 different humanitarian projects. Charity Casa Sperantei and UniCredit Tiriac Bank are organizing the event and individuals or groups are invited to test their endurance to the limit and raise some money for worthy causes.

The route involves crossing the Danube and the Balkan mountains twice, passing through spectacular scenery (see picture, from race route), from 0 to 2,000 meters altitude. The first part of the marathon, from Bucharest to Sofia, will be covered by bike in three days, around 150 km every day. The  participants will then return on foot, running around 65 km per day for 7 days.

Companies are invited to support the marathon and to contribute to the financing of 10 humanitarian projects, in amounts between EUR 100 and 3,000. Also sport enthusiasts who want to participate in the adventure can register up until November 5, but places are limited. In exchange for a small fee, participants can choose either to complete the entire route or only a part. Once registered for the race, participants can choose which causes they want to support and then raise money from sponsors.

Details of the marathon and the causes supported, including registration process and other means of involvement can be found on the website 1000balkan.com. During the race, the site will publish photos and news, as well as taking donations.
