Cinemas in Romania report increasing revenues while number of movie theaters down
The 68 functional cinemas in Romania reported revenues of about EUR 26.5 million in 2010, with over EUR 5.8 million more compared to the previous year, given that the number of viewers increased by 1.22 million over 2009. According to the 2010 Cinema Statistical Yearbook, made by the National Centre for Cinematography (CNC), the highest number of viewers was recorded last year in Romanian cinemas, out of the last five years.
However, the number of functional cinemas declined steadily over the past five years, reaching 68 cinemas in 2010, compared to 74 in 2009, 75 in 2008, 72 in 2007 and 73 in 2006.
Cinema City Romania and Hollywood Multiplex have been the cinemas that recorded the highest revenues. Thus, Cinema City Romania registered over EUR 13.44 million last year and around 3 million viewers, while Hollywood Multiplex recorded revenues of EUR 5.29 million and 1.17 million viewers. Ranked third in the top cinemas, based on revenues and the number of viewers, Movieplex Cinema made sales of EUR 3.61 million and had 775,803 viewers.
