18 May 2023

Cluj-Napoca's "Avram Iancu" International Airport is embarking on a major expansion project worth over EUR 74 million.

The project, which is set to last 24 months, aims to expand the departures passenger terminal on the north side of the airport. The funding for this endeavor includes RON 129.6 million (some EUR 26.3 million) in co-financing from the European Union.

Alin Tişe, the president of the Cluj County Council, expressed the significance of this investment, which is being made possible through European funds. He emphasized the need to enhance passenger flow given the airport's growing popularity and the anticipation of a return to normalcy in terms of travel patterns.

"In the context of the constant annual increase in passenger traffic and the recovery of the pre-pandemic traffic volume, it was necessary to optimize the flow of passengers, especially during busy periods and peak hours," he said

The expansion plans entail adding approximately 7,200 square meters to the departure terminal, allowing for the creation of two new boarding gates for foreign flights and one gate for domestic flights. Additionally, the aircraft parking platform will be expanded by nearly 9,000 square meters.

The investment comes as the airport witnesses a steady annual increase in passenger traffic and aims to accommodate the expected recovery of pre-pandemic traffic volumes. Cluj-Napoca Airport holds the distinction of being the largest regional airport in Romania in terms of passenger numbers.
