Clunkers program and new pollution tax, expected to fuel growth for Romanian car market

10 January 2011

The Romanian car market is expected to grow this year on last year mostly due to the Clunkers program, as well as due to the car pollution tax, which is more favorable for purchasing new cars, according to Fabrice Cambolive (in picture), commercial director of Automobile Dacia car maker.

“It is hard to put forward a growth percentage. We are optimistic, but within bounds,” said Cambolive.  Dacia car sales grew by 12 percent to 349,000 units in 2010 on a wordlwide level, according to the company. The car maker sold 154.600 Sandero cars, 127.200 Dacia Logan cars and 67.000 Dacia Duster units.

Romania brought the car maker a 31.7 percent market share, with 36.730 units sold locally. The company had planned to achieve a 30 percent market share in the country and aims to exceed the 30 percent market share threshold in Romania this year.
