Coal mine in Romania to be shut down due to international agreements

23 October 2015

The production activity at the Petrila coal mine in the Jiului Valley, in the Hunedoara county, will be stopped at the end of October, according to some international agreements.

A part of the miners will be laid off, whereas others will be redistributed to the Uricani and Paroseni mines, reports local Mediafax.

The National Company for Closing Mines, which was founded in 2012, following a decision of the European Union, has stipulated that the Petrila mine would close in 2015, because it was an uncompetitive mine. The state aid for the closing of these mines includes payments that compensate for the stop of the production, as well as payments for miners’ compensatory salaries.

In 2016, the mine has to be demolished and the area needs to be cleaned up.
