Colectiv club death toll reaches 63, after 30-year old Romanian graphic artist dies in UK hospital

22 December 2015

Another victim of the Bucharest Colectiv club fire died on Monday in a hospital in the UK. The number of people who lost their lives in the tragedy that took place on October 30 in Bucharest thus reached 63.

30-year old graphic artist Cristian Mitroi was first hospitalized in the Floreasca unit in Bucharest and later transported to the UK, where he passed away on December 21.

In late-October, a usual rock concert in a club turned into one of the greatest tragedies Romania has seen in years. When the fire started in Colectiv club, at around 22:30 on October 30, Goodbye to Gravity was playing for some 400 people. 27 of them lost their lives that night, but the number of deaths kept increasing in the weeks that followed.

Another 36 people died afterwards in hospitals in Romania and abroad. Many young people lost their lives following the nightclub fire, including journalists, musicians, artists, and students.

Many of the people who died after the Colectiv club tragedy in Bucharest have been killed by aggressive germ infections they developed in the Romanian hospitals, according to some of the doctors who have treated them. The new disclosures were made one month after the tragedy. They showed the disaster in Romania’s public healthcare system, which does not have a single hospital capable of properly treating burn victims.

According to the Health Ministry, 12 persons injured in the Colectiv nightclub fire are still hospitalized in Bucharest. Another 21 patients are hospitalized abroad. About 39 injured people were transferred to hospitals in other countries, but four of them died in UK hospitals, three in Germany, two in Holland, one in Israel, and one in Austria.
