Comana Monastery, revamped with EU money

27 December 2010

Comana Monastery, located in Giurgiu county, will be revamped with EUR 7 million, most of which non-reimbursable EU funds. The project aims at upgrading the infrastructure of the Fortified Monastery of Comana, hoping to attract more tourists to the area.  The revamping process will take three years to complete.

It was Vlad Tepes (Prince of Wallachia during 1431-1476, more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler) who had the Comana Monastery built in 1461, on an islet surrounded by swamps and the access way to it ran across a wooden bridge that used to be set on fire in times of peril. The Monastery was rebuilt in 1588 by boyar Radu Serban and it currently needs consolidation works.

The Comana Monastery raised Tourism Minister Elena Udrea's interest, who said during the visit she paid there that she would support the development of the sightseeing places of the area.
