Constanta mayor resigns on “injustices, distress and anguish”
The Mayor of Constanta Radu Mazare, currently in custody in the case where he is charged with bribery, resigned from his position on Friday, May 22.
Mazare allegedly took a EUR 9 million bribe to help some companies get authorizations, according to prosecutors. He submitted his resignation to the City Council and City Hall through a handwritten letter.
“My desire to do good to the city and its inhabitants does not justify the injustices, distress and anguish to which I was subjected for so long, for which I resign as mayor of Constanta,” according to the letter, reports local Mediafax.
Radu Mazare has been the mayor of Constanta for 15 years. “Even if sometimes I was too rebel or nonconformist, I have devoted all my skills and energy to the community. I apologize to everyone for my mistakes,” he wrote in the resignation letter.
