Hundreds of workers building Romania's first highway tunnel have held a subterranean Christmas Party where they work.

The tunnel on the unfinished Sibiu – Orastie highway in Romania hosted a company party for the construction companies working on the project.

More than 400 staff who worked on the highway segment partied with barbecues in the Sacel tunnel where they installed tables for food.

The construction companies working on the fourth segment of the highway project - Astaldi SpA - Euro Construct Trading 98 SRL - Astalrom SA – said they organized the party to show their staff their appreciation for the work.

The 340 meter long tunnel, which is the first tunnel on the Sibiu – Orastie highway track, is almost finished. The highway segment should be opened this week, most likely together with the first and second segments of the same highway.

The fourth segment of the highway is 16.2 kilometers long, and worth some EUR 133 million, most of which will be covered by EU money. The segment includes two viaducts, two bridges, four passages above the highway, two passages above the railway, and the first highway tunnel in Romania, which is 340 meters long.

The third segment of the highway is 21 kilometers long, but because of land slides, it is not yet finished and will not be opened together with the other three, as it is scheduled to be ready next year.
