Consultant: Romania's fiscal lottery doesn’t work in the long term

27 April 2015

The low prizes offered by the fiscal receipt lottery will discourage Romanians to participate in this event in the future, according to Gabriel Sincu, executive director with consultancy firm EY Romania.

“I’ve seen other cases. There were countries in the European Union that offered very valuable prizes but very few of them. For example a car per quarter or a very large sum. These also worked for a short period, and the results were not the ones expected by the authorities. It doesn’t work to do this in the long term and constantly,” Sincu said, cited by local Wall-street.ro.

The Romanian Finance Ministry recently launched a fiscal lottery to encourage consumers to ask for fiscal receipts and keep them.

The first draw was on April 13, and more than 9,150 people have already announced they had winning receipts. The RON 1 million (EUR 225,000) prize thus split between these people, each gaining about RON 109 (EUR 23) in the end. The final prize will be announced after May 13, when the period for claiming the prizes expires.
