Control finds irregularities at Romania's State Secretariat for Revolutionaries

22 November 2016

The Prime Minister’s Control Body’s inspections at the State Secretariat for Revolutionaries between 2012 and 2016 have revealed several irregularities.

The institution’s database wasn’t functioning and several people who were considered “revolutionaries” and were receiving benefits were between 5 and 12-year old at the time of the Romanian Revolution in 1989, reports local News.ro.

In theory, the institution has a computerized database, for which it had acquired a software program. However, the database is not used, due to the impossibility to update the program. This means that the database is not operational.

The Control Body also found documents showing signs of counterfeiting.

Last week, the prosecutors arrested Adrian Sanda, the head of the State Secretariat for Revolutionaries. Prosecutors say that most of the over 3,500 people who have received so far the “fighter with a decisive role in the Revolution” title didn’t meet the conditions required by law. Most of the certified “revolutionaries” apparently bought their titles by “offering certain amounts of money to people who had influence over members of the two state institutions”.
