Conviction in Romania's most famous missing case: 22 years in jail for husband of Elodia Ghinescu, whose body was never found

Romanian Cristian Cioaca, a former cop and husband of a woman who went missing six years ago, was sentenced to 22 years in jail for having murdered his wife, Elodia Ghinescu. The case kept headlines in Romania for years, being one of the most famous missing person case in Romania.

The wife's body was never found, but five years from the time she went missing, she was declared dead, according to law, and prosecutors went to court against the husband. Cioaca was arrested in November 2012 for serious murder. The recent court decision is not final, it can be further appealed.

Prosecutors asked for his arrest after the DNA samples gathered from the couple's home were proved to belong to the missing wife, Elodia Ghinescu. According to them, Coaca killed and cut his wife in their apartment in Brasov, and then disposed of the body.

Only six other murder convictions without finding a body have been recorded in Romania so far.
