Romania sees new record single-day spike in coronavirus cases

Romania added 777 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the highest number of daily cases since the start of the pandemic.

The total number of Covid-19 cases reached 35,003 on Thursday, July 16, the authorities announced in the daily report released at 13:00.

Of the confirmed cases, 24,335 patients were discharged: 22,189 have recovered, while 2,146 asymptomatic patients were discharged ten days after the diagnosis.

Furthermore, 757 patients who tested positive for the Covid-19 infection were discharged upon request by July 16.

At the same time, 19 more patients died in the past 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 1,971.

Of those who passed away in the last 24 hours, two were aged between 40 and 49, two between 50 and 59, six between 60 and 60, three between 70 and 79, and six were over 80 years old. Eighteen of them had previous medical conditions.

The number of patients admitted to intensive care units also went up to 261, up from 248 the day before.

At a national level, 906,015 tests were carried out by July 16, 19,097 of them in the past 24 hours, the highest number so far.

The number of coronavirus cases reported daily could reach 1,200 - 1,600 by mid-August, according to a Government document supporting the decision to extend the state of alert seen by G4Media.ro.

The prognosis was done by the Technical-Scientific Committee of the National Committee for Emergency Situations.
