Court adds time to former Romanian Prime Minister’s current jail sentence for corruption

24 June 2014

Former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, who is currently serving his second jail term for corruption, has recently had his sentence upped by six months, to his current four years jail time. The court decided to merge two jail sentences, of four years in one case, and of two years in another, and add six months on top of it. The decision is final. Out of the two-year sentence, Nastase already served eight months, and got an early release in 2013.

After the recent decision, Nastase will not be able to ask for an early release, how he intended to do under the four-year jail term, according to Mediafax newswire. Nastase already served eight months in jail between June 2012 and March 2013. He has also been incarcerated since January this year in the case nicknamed Zambaccian.

Nastase’s wife also got a three-year jail sentence, with parole, in the same case. The former Prime Minister was sent to jail for having received some EUR 630,000 in bribes, mostly products and services, between 2002 and 2004 via his wife.

In a third case involving the former Prime Minister, a file nicknamed Aunt Tamara, Nastase was acquitted in September 2012.
