Court finds car towing illegal in Bucharest's fourth district, lawyers push for extending decision applicability
Car towing in Bucharest's fourth district has been labeled illegal after a Romanian lawyer took on the authorities in court and won.
However, at this point, the court's decision will only be applied in this case and car towing will continue in the district.
The lawyer, Petre Piperea, whose car was towed last year, is now also handling the cases of several other people whose cars were also towed and pushing for the decision to be applied generally.
Piperea, whose brother Gheorghe Piperea, is also a lawyer, is known for handling law suits against lender BCR.
The court found that local councils of the fourth and sixth district in Bucharest have illegally modified the Road Code. The decisions deem car towing and asking for a fee to recover the car, illegal.
Should the decision be applied to car towing in general, those who already paid a car towing fee can ask for their money back. Similar law suits are currently ongoing in the second and third districts of Bucharest as well.
Each Bucharest district works with a different car towing company. Car owners whose cars are towed need to pay a fee for recovering their cars from the car towing company's car park.
