Daimler to produce gearboxes for Mercedes-Benz luxury cars in central Romania

Daimler subsidiary Star Transmission will produce gearboxes for Mercedes-Benz’s E-Klasse and S-Klasse luxury models at its plant in Sebes, Alba county, in central Romania.

“There will be top Mercedes-Benz cars that will have gearboxes manufactured in Romania. There will be transmissions with the latest technology produced here, that we will find in the brand’s luxury cars,” said Boris Billich, CEO Mercedes-Benz Romania, quoted by local business daily Ziarul Financiar.

Earlier this month, Star Transmission inaugurated a new gearbox assembly unit for Mercedes-Benz in Romania, following total investments of EUR 40 million.

The new unit is located in Sebes, central Romania, and has an area of 13,000 sqm. Construction work lasted about ten months and the unit employs 150 people.

In April 2013, Daimler announced its plans to invest EUR 300 million in expanding its production capacity in Romania.

Star Transmission was founded in 2001 and is an international supplier of components for the automotive industry.
