Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania asked to support new Government after ruling alliance split

27 February 2014

With Romania's Government currently featuring seven interim ministers, and coalition partner the National Liberal Party calling it quits from the executive, negotiations are ongoing to fill in the vacated seats, as well as gain more political support. Even if they have the majority in the Romanian Parliament, the Social Democratic Party PSD and the Conservative Party, both part of the Government, still haven't ruled out the former alliance the Social Liberal Union.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta, the head of PSD, said the new structure of the Government, to be presented in the Parliament next week, will be similar to that during the USL period. His message continued to be that the liberals can always return to the executive.

Meanwhile, the PM has asked support from the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and said that each party in the new Government structure will have its own vice – prime minister. The deputy PM seat was among the topics which sent the PNL and the PSD apart, as the PNL wanted to name Klaus Iohannis Interior Minister, and assign a deputy PM seat for him, which would have required a slight change in the Government structure.

Under the new structure, the new alliance the Social Democratic Union USD, the minorities, and the UDMR should offer the Government a stable majority in the Parliament.

The USD was created in the last weeks of collaboration between the Liberals and the Social Democrats, and was among the moves which created internal conflicts. Basically the PSD created an union within an union. More about it here.

The new list of ministers in Romania will be made public on Monday, March 3.
