Demographic aging deepens in Romania
The demographic aging has deepened in the last year in Romania, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The share of Romanians over 65 years old went up from 15.3% in January 2015 to 15.7% while the share of Romanians under 14 went down from 14.9% to 14.7%. The demographic aging index thus increased from 103 to 106.4 older people per 100 young people during this period.
The number of people over 65 reached 3.48 million exceeding by 210,000 the people aged 0-14.
The population’s average age went up by 0.3 years to 40.9 years. The media age also went up by 0.4 years, reaching 40.4 years.
Romania’s total population was 22.24 million people in January 2016, down from 22.27 million in January 2015. This also includes the Romanians living abroad who have their official domicile in Romania.
