Proposal: Prisoners in Romania, paroled only after damages recovered
Romania’s National Anticorruption Department DNA wants prisoners to be paroled only after the damages they caused are recovered.
DNA chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi on Friday sent a notification on this matter to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, reports local Mediafax.
Last year, Kovesi accused Romania’s Tax Agency ANAF of not recovering prejudices.
A recent report of the Court of Auditors showed that ANAF managed to recover less than 1% of the assets and amounts seized in 2014 by local prosecutors as part of criminal investigations. The value of the seized assets reached RON 2.85 billion (EUR 632 million) at the end of 2014. However, ANAF recovered only EUR 5.3 million during that period.
