21 February 2019

The driver job remains the most wanted in Romania, according to an analysis by local classifieds platform Olx.ro. The attractiveness of jobs in international transport drives the deficit of this type of jobs further, the survey found.

The number of recruitment ads for drivers in the second half of 2018 grew 2% compared to the similar period of 2017. The “drivers-car services-couriers” category gathered the most ads in the second half of 2018, with over 45,500 active offers. The category also had the highest number of applicants over the same period, with over 160,000 unique candidates and over 1.5 million unique applications, the Olx analysis showed.

On average, 42 candidates apply for a driver’s job advertised on Olx, and the vacancy is filled in approximately 18 days.

An Olx survey among 450 Romanian drivers (98% men) showed that their income levels vary between RON 1,100 (EUR 231) and over RON 7,000 (EUR 1,473). A total of 9% of respondents reported revenues in between RON 1,100 and RON 1,500 (EUR 315) ; 13% revenues between RON 1,500 and RON 2,000 (EUR 421); 17% revenues between RON 2,000 and RON 2,500 (EUR 526); 13% revenues between RON 2,500 and RON 3,000 (EUR 631); 12% revenues between RON 3,000 and RON 4,000 (EUR 842); 10% revenues between RON 4,000 and RON 5,000 (EUR 1,052); 6% revenues between RON 5,000 and RON 6,000 (EUR 1,263); 3% revenues between RON 6,000 and RON 7,000; and 17% revenues of over RON 7,000.

“The drivers’ salaries show a major discrepancy between the offers of those working in local transport and those in international transport. Those working locally earn in between RON 2,000 and RON 4,000 net, while 20 – 25% of the drivers we talked to and worked in international transport have salaries of over RON 6,000 net, including benefits and trips outside the country. The deficit of candidates and employees for the driver jobs also comes from the increased attractiveness of openings in international transport,” Paul Neagoe, business manager with Olx Romania, explained, quoted by Agerpres.

The top of the jobs with the most openings in the second half of 2018 goes on with the “engineer- workers-builders” category, with over 32,500 ads, and “hotel-restaurant staff” with over 19,800 ads. At the same time, over 18,000 ads were listed in the “cashier – commercial worker” category, and over 17,000 jobs were advertised in the “work abroad” category.

The latter category gathered the second highest number of applicants, after the driver one, with over 700,000 applications. On average, 52 candidates applied for a vacancy advertised in the “work abroad” section.

Employers find candidates for the baby-sitter – housekeeper positions fastest, with an average of 12 days needed to fill such a position. The jobs in the agriculture-zootechnics category fill in about 16 days, while those in the work abroad category in 17 days.

At the opposite end, the positions that take the longest to fill are those in the “production – warehouse –logistics worker” section, where the average time is of 23 days.

In Bucharest, most new recruitment ads and most applicants were registered in the “drivers – car services - couriers” category. Over 350,000 candidates applied to some 9,000 recruitment ads in this category. At the same time, over 137,000 candidates applied for the over 4,000 vacancies available in the “hotel- restaurant staff” category.

The analysis was based on data in the Olx platform’s recruitment section in the last six months of 2018.
