EC approves EUR 85.6 mln contribution to Romania's Ro-Net
The European Commission has approved its financial contribution to the Ro-Net project in Romania, some EUR 85.6 million, which will help connect 783 localities in Romania to broadband internet.
Of this amount, EUR 57 million represent non-reimbursable financial contribution. Local authorities found some 2,200 so called ‘white areas’, but will connect only 783 of them via optic fiber and wireless point-to-point technology. After this program will be implemented, about 99.2% of Romania’s population will be connected to broadband internet.
The contract will be implemented by Telekom Romania – former Romtelecom and Cosmote, which won the bid for the 18-month period. The infrastructure created by the company will become public property and will be used by any operator interested in offering broadband internet services in those rural areas.
