08 November 2010

Romania and the Republic of Moldova will sign a border cooperation treaty and other similar initiatives will follow in the Balkan region, said Jose Manuel Barroso (in picture), president of the European Commission, who is in Bucharest attending the Danube Summit which takes place in Romania.

The Romanian authorities had not announced the treaty but confirmed the information. The treaty will be signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi and the Republic of Moldova Prime Minister Vlad Filat in Bucharest.  The treaty has been debated by the two countries for the last 19 years.

Romanian capital city Bucharest will host the Danube Summit from November 8, an event that is expected to reconfirm in a final declaration the political support for the future EU’s Danube Strategy. The event precedes the December summit meeting of the European Council, where the European Commission will unveil a draft action plan for the Danube Strategy, with a final version to be approved by the June 2011 summit meeting of the European Council. Delegations from 14 Danube countries are expected to attend and Poland is also invited to participate as observer.
