EC starts new infringement against Romania on gas supply security
The European Commission announced on June 18 that it would go to the European Court of Justice against Romania for failing to adopt an emergency plan to ensure the country’s gas supply security.
The absence of such a plan affects Romania's capacity to cope with a possible crisis, according to the EC.
The EU member states need to draft emergency plans and send them to the European Commission. Such an emergency plan establishes the measures and procedures enforced in the event of gas supply disruptions. The measures need to be coordinated with neighboring states’ plans, according to the EC.
Member states had the obligation to adopt these plans by December 2012.
Romania’s Energy Ministry announced on June 18 that it finalized the emergency plan on June 17 and sent it to the European Commission.
The ministry’s representatives also said that gas supply to the population was guaranteed in Romania, as 90% of Romania’s consumption comes from the internal production and in case of supply disruptions, the available gas goes to the population.
