Eduard Hellvig, Romania’s new spy chief
Eduard Hellvig on Monday, March 2, received the Parliament’s approval to become the new head of Romania’s main intelligence service SRI. He got 498 favorable votes and 15 votes against, reports local Mediafax.
Former head of SRI George Maior resigned in January.
Hellvig said that fighting corruption and developing the national defence capacity are two essential action coordinates.
Even if progress was recorded, corruption still represents a risk factor for the national safety, by affecting the economy and undermining the institutions, he said.
Eduard Hellvig, 40, is currently vice president of the National Liberal Party (PNL). He was minister of development for a few months, in the first Government led by Victor Ponta. Back then, the PNL had a governing alliance with Ponta’s Social Democratic Party (PSD).
