Romanian prime minister Ludovic Orban says that the local elections can take place if the situation of coronavirus (COVID-19) spread remains at the level seen during the last two weeks.

Countries that have held elections recently (Poland, Croatia) haven't seen an increase in the number of infections following the electoral process, PM Orban argued.

Orban was asked on Monday whether the elections could be held safely if the number of new COVID-19 cases remained around one thousand per day.

"If we look at the evolution in the last two weeks, we can see that we have managed to stop the growth. The increase is extremely small," said Orban, quoted by News.ro.

He assured that after the rules for the electoral campaign and the vote are passed, there will be no problems in the electoral process.
