Elections ongoing for new Romanian Academy president: mathematician, engineer and doctor in the race
A mathematician, an engineer and a doctor are running for the leading position in the Romanian Academy. Elections for president of the Romanian Academy set to take place on Tuesday, April 8.
Mathematician Viorel Barbu, engineer Ionel Valentin Vlad and doctor Victor Voicu are the candidates in the race to lead Romania's Academy.
UPDATE: Valentin Vlad has won the presidential seat, with 64 votes.
The future president will replace Ionel Haiduc, who is at his second mandate – he took over the helm of the Academy in 2006, and was re-elected for a second mandate in 2010.
The vice-presidents will be elected in another meeting most likely on April 24.
The Romanian Academy is the country's head cultural and scientific institution, gathering personalities from science, art and literature. It currently has 77 members, 80 correspondents, 86 honorary members abroad, and 31 members at home.
