Electoral battle: Romania President says PM was undercover officer
The presidential race is heating up in Romania, with some help from the incumbent president Traian Basescu. He recently accused Prime Minister Victor Ponta, himself a presidential candidate, of having been an undercover officer, while also being a prosecutor, which was not constitutional at the time.
Basescu said on TV that Ponta was an undercover officer between 1997 and 2001, and said he was ready to prove his accusations.
On the other side, the PM says the president is using Romanians’ trust in the country’s institutions to fuel his own political and electoral game.
Basescu officially support former minister Elena Udrea in the race for the presidential seat. Elections will take place on November 2, so the political battle will last for two more weeks.
