Electoral roll shows over 3 mln Romanians legally living abroad

20 August 2012

Over 3 million Romanians are living abroad legally, while half a million had their ID cards expired at the referendum for impeaching Romania's president, according to data recently released by the Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

The Government – meaning the Domestic Affairs Ministry and the External Affairs Ministry – recently sent the data from the electoral roll to the Constitutional Court, before its August 21 meeting, when it should decide on the referendum validity.  Over 30,000 people will be taken out from the list, the PM also announced.

If the Constitutional Court will decide the referendum was invalid, the suspended president Traian Basescu will return to office, said the Prime Minister, a leader of the Social Liberal Union, which opposes Basescu's supporting party, the Democrat Liberal Party (PDL).
