European Commission: 11 out of 20 Romanian consumer loan websites fail EU tests

11 January 2012

A total of 11 Romanian consumer loan websites out of the 20 checked by the European Commission (EC) came up with problems, shows an investigation made across the European Union, according to an EC statement.

“When people search for credit they sometimes discover that the credit is more expensive than it first looked, because important information is missing or unclear,” said EU commissioner for consumers, John Dalli.

In Cyprus, Malta, Slovakia and Spain, problems were found on all the websites checked, while in Bulgaria, Greece, Iceland and Ireland none of the checked websites posted problems.

Out of the 562 websites checked initially, only 30 percent passed the meticulous checking for compliance with the relevant EU standards for consumer protection, while the rest of 70 percent were flagged for further investigation, reads the EC statement.
