European Medicines Agency warns of Ibuprofen risks
The painkiller Ibuprofen increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, when used in high doses, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
The risk affects only those who take doses higher than 2,400 milligrams per day. Researches haven’t noticed any risk in patients who take Ibuprofen in doses smaller than 1,200 milligrams per day.
Usual doses for adults vary between 200 and 400 milligrams three times a day. Ibuprofen has been on the market since the ‘60s.
Some of its formulas are sold without prescription throughout Europe, Romania included. The most popular Ibuprofen drug brand in Romania is Reckitt Benckiser’s Nurofen, which is among the best-selling OTC drugs in Romania. Other popular drugs containing Ibuprofen are Advil, Adagin, Brufen, Ibalgin.
