Eurostat: Over 40% of Romanians live in houses without baths, worst housing conditions in EU

Romania has the worst housing conditions among European Union countries, as over 40 percent of the population lives in dwellings with no indoor flushing toilets, bath or showers, according to the EU’s statistics office Eurostat.

According to Eurostat, 42.5 percent of Romanians live in dwellings with no indoor flushing toilet and 41.2 percent have no bath or shower. Over half of Romanians live in overcrowded dwellings and 22 percent live in dwellings with leaking roofs or dampness.

Romanian housing is doing well in terms of lighting as only 8.7 percent of Romanians live in dwellings where darkness is perceived as a problem. According to EU statistics, 37.7 percent of Romanians live in flats, 60.7 percent live in houses and 1.6 percent in duplexes.

Romania is significantly behind other EU countries in terms of minimum housing conditions. Romania is seconded by Bulgaria in terms of dwellings lacking indoor toilets, with 26 percent, and by Latvia in terms of dwellings lacking a bath or shower, with 18 percent.
