Exhibition on Romania's Saxons – or Sasi minority to open this month

09 December 2013

The Saxons – or Sasi minority in Romania's Transylvania region will be celebrated in an exhibition opening on December 12 at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant. The exhibition will be on until February 2, 2014. It will feature 200 objects from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including ceramics, textiles, copper objects, old book, letters and old photos, trying to recapture the ways of a culture whose continuity is currently endangered.

The exhibition will also include old furniture from the fortified Evangelical church in Felmer, Brasov county, which is currently in a severely degraded state. The items on display were provided by the Renascendis association.

The Transylvanian Saxons or Sași in Romania are people of German ethnicity who settled in Transylvania from the 12th century onwards. Very few still live in Romania, where around 60,000 Germans are registered, the number including also Banat Swabians and Sathmar Swabians.
