Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep, currently number three in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, lost the first match of the encounter between Romania and the Czech Republic, in the World Group of the Fed Cup.

Halep won the first set after tiebreak, 7-6, but lost the following two sets 4-6, 2-6 giving the Czechs an early lead. Pliskova, currently 13th in the WTA ranking, had lost all her previous three matches against Halep, including one earlier this year in Sidney.

However, the Czechs have come to Cluj-Napoca determined to get a quick victory over the Romanians. Czech Star Petra Kvitova said on Friday that her team would lead 2-0 after the first day.

Kvitova, number 9 in the WTA ranking, played the second match of the day against Romanian Monica Niculescu (37 WTA). Niculescu won the first set 6-3, after one hour.
