05 November 2018

Romania’s finance minister Eugen Teodorovici said on Friday, November 2, that the date when Romania will switch to the euro has been decided and the timetable would be announced this week.

“In 2024, this is the official calendar,” Teodorovici said during a press conference, local Mediafax reported.

A memorandum including all the necessary steps will be adopted this week, the finance minister added.

Ruling party leader Liviu Dragnea announced that Romania will join the euro zone in 2024 in March this year, at his party’s national congress. The PSD members also adopted a convention related to joining the euro by 2024.

A national commission tasked with drafting the plan for joining the euro was formed at the end of March. The commission’s latest meeting took place on October 23. The commission includes the president of the Romanian Academy, Ioan Aurel Pop, and Romania’s National Bank (BNR) governor Mugur Isarescu, among others.
