Fifth day of fire at nature park in western Romania
The firemen are working for a fifth day in a row to put out a fire that broke in the Domogled - Valea Cernei Nature Park, in south-western Romania, Agerpres reported. They are working after two additional hot spots were identified during the morning of May 2, the Caraş-Severin Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) said.
After 35 helicopter water drops, the fire had been put out on the evening of May 1. It reactivated overnight because of the wind, the Caraş-Severin ISU explained. The fire extended on an area of four hectares on Wednesday, the forest management company Romsilva said.
The firefighters were working both on the ground and with helicopters to release water on the fire. Firemen from the counties of Caraş- Severin, Mehedinţi, Gorj and Timiş, alongside the rangers of the park, were working on the ground to extinguish the fire, which broke out during the afternoon of April 27.
The fire started in a steep area, where intervention is difficult, at a black pine (Pinus nigra banatica) reserve. The area of the fire is located some 25 km away from Băile Herculane.
