Fishing boat carrying 87 migrants, intercepted by the Romanian coastguard
More and more migrants try to enter Romania illegally by sea.
The Romanian coastguard intercepted on Sunday, September 3, a fishing boat carrying 87 migrants that was sailing towards the Romanian coast.
The Border Police spotted the boat on Sunday morning at around 06:35, about 14 nautical miles east of Midia port, at the maritime border, outside the territorial waters. The Coastguard sent two ships to identify the boat.
However, the fishing boat didn’t answer to the Border Police’s warnings and continued sailing towards the Romanian shore. It stopped near the port of Midia at around 10:00, accompanied by the Coastguard ships.
The Romanian authorities found 87 people on board, namely 48 men, 16 women, and 23 children. The Border Police’s press release did not mention their nationality, but said that the police will continue the investigation in this case.
Similar events happened in August. For example, on Sunday, August 20, Romania’s coastguard intercepted a fishing boat carrying 70 migrants who were trying to enter Romania illegally. They spotted the boat near Mangalia port, and escorted it to shore. The group of migrants was made up of 23 children, 12 women, and 35 men, according to a statement from the Border Police.
One week before, the coastguard intercepted a boat with 69 Iraqi migrants on board.
