Five doctors from Piatra Neamt hospital detained on bribery charges
Five orthopedic doctors from the Emergency County Hospital of Piatra Neamt, in Eastern Romania, were detained for 24 hours on bribery charges.
The Anticorruption General Directorate (DGA) conducted seven searches on Tuesday, March 5, out of which two at the Emergency County Hospital in Piatra Neamt, and detained five doctors suspected of corruption, according to a press release from DGA. The charges are related to their medical activity, the same document reads, the five doctors being accused of having taken bribes.
During the searches conducted on Tuesday, the prosecutors found and took several documents important for the case, as well as “important sums of money,” DGA also said. Other people are also investigated in this case.
Doctor Codrut Munteanu, the manager of the Neamt County Hospital, said on Tuesday that the five doctors’ arrest “is a situation of extreme crisis,” as the Orthopedics Section was left with only two doctors, and this seriously affects its activity, local News.ro reported.
“With only two doctors, we can not work on this section. It’s impossible. Honestly, I now have a lot of hypotheses in my head after this news (e.n. the five doctors’ arrest) from an organizational point of view. From a miracle that would save the situation tomorrow, which would imply finding available doctors, to the darkest scenario, which means closing the section temporarily,” Munteanu said.
