Flood aftermath: Romanian Govt to offer extra EUR 6 mln emergency help as infrastructure damage bill rises to EUR 1.6 mln
Flooding in Romania's Galati county last week caused more than EUR 1.6 million in infrastructure damages, on top of the 227 houses destroyed.
Out of the EUR 1.6 million, EUR 0.5 million represents the cost of rebuilding county roads only.
The local authorities from Galati county will be able to use the Government's intervention funding to repair the roads and rebuild the damaged houses.
Most of the homes affected were made of unburnt bricks, which are easily affected by water, so many remain at risk of falling apart despite flood waters receding.
For people whose houses were affected by the flooding but are not at risk of collapsing, the local authorities will evaluate the damages and offer compensation to cover construction materials for repairs.
Each of the affected families will get emergency social help of RON 1,000 – the equivalent of some EUR 230.
The Government had a budget of some EUR 6 million to cover the social aid, which will include financial help for the families of the nine people who died in the flooding.
Their families will get around EUR 1,100 each – RON 5.000, the Government recently decided.
Money will be distributed to those affected by the flooding two weeks after the recent Government decision to release the funds is published in the Official Gazette.
