Foreign direct investments in Romania down 8% but current account balance deficit shrinks in first ten months of 2013

16 December 2013

Foreign direct investments in Romania amounted to EUR 1.8 billion in the first ten months of the year, a year-on-year decrease of 8.2 percent, according to the data provided by the Central Bank BNR.

Between January and October 2013, the current account balance of payments had a deficit of EUR 955 million, down compared to EUR 5.3 billion recorded in the same period the previous year, due to the decrease in trade deficit and the increase in services surplus and current transfers surplus.

The balance of payments is a record of all monetary transactions between a country and the rest of the world, and these transactions include payments for the country's exports and imports of goods, services, financial capital, and financial transfers

The medium and long term external debt stood at EUR 79.5 billion at the end of October 2013 (80.4 percent of total external debt), one percent over the level recorded at end-2012.

The short-term external debt totaled EUR 19.4 billion, down 7.2 percent compared to end-2012, according to the BNR data.
