Foreign investors triple their Romanian bond holdings in three years

26 August 2014

Foreign investors had EUR 15.3 billion placed in Romanian bonds at the end of the second quarter, three times more compared to three years ago, according to an analysis made by local brokerage firm BT Securities.

Their total portfolios of Romanian instruments were EUR 17.7 billion, with portfolio placements in local shares a little over EUR 2 billion, Economica.net reports.

“The international environment became volatile and uncertain on the large markets and foreign investors weren’t interested to take exposure on Romanian shares. On the other hand, the still large interest rate for RON denominated instruments attracted foreign investment funds, which made placements in state bonds and other Romanian bonds,” said Dan Rusu, chief analyst of local brokerage firm BT Securities.
