Foreigners 'distance adopt' sheltered stray dogs in Romania
All the stray dogs in the shelters of the Bucharest District 2 were distance adopted, and their adopters, many of which live abroad, pay a monthly fee to keep the animals in the shelter.
All in all, 690 dogs were adopted this year, and everyone who pledged to adopt dogs will pay RON 77 (or some EUR 17) every month, which covers shelter, food and vet support for a dog.
Most dogs were distance adopted by citizens in France, UK, Germany, the US, Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and Luxembourg. Romanians too chose the distance adoption, including some who live in Bucharest but who do not have the conditions to keep a dog.
The Bucharest District 2 dog shelters are located in Butimanu, in Dambovita county, and in Tanganu, in Ilfov county, both near Bucharest.
