Former Romanian business attache to Singapore gets jail time for killing one, injuring two in car crash
Romania's former business attache in Singapore Silviu Ionescu was found guilty and sent to jail for three years for an accident which killed one and injured two others. The Bucharest District 3 court decision is not final and can be appealed. The court found that Silviu Ionescu caused the accident in 2009 in Singapore, and then he later lied about it, trying to divert the Singapore authorities to another suspect.
Prosecutors showed that Ionescu ignored the red light and hit two people on a cross-walk, but did not stop, and ignored a second red light at the next cross – walk, and hit a third person. He continued his ride and abandoned his car in an industrial area of Singapore. He later said the car was stolen from the Romanian Embassy to Singapore.
Ionescu said he was not guilty and insisted he tried to fight for Romania's image, as his reputation was already compromised, and he had already served one year in jail.
