Gabroveni Inn opens in Bucharest’s Old Town – new concert hall & cultural center

22 September 2014

The Gabroveni Inn in Bucharest’s Old Town opened for public last week-end, after undergoing extensive renovation work in the last two years. The Inn includes a new concerts halls which seats 200, a smaller hall for 70 people, a hall which can become a studio or rehearsal room, four exhibition halls, offices, a coffee shop and a tourist information center. The Inn will host exhibitions, concerts, and various other cultural shows.

The Inn’s opening was part of the Bucharest’s Days, marking 555 years since the Romanian capital city was first certified.

The Gabroveni Inn was built between 1804 and 1818, between the Lipscani and Gabroveni streets of the Old Town.

The likely first owner of the inn was  Tudor Hagi Tudorache, one of the most famous merchants in the first half of the 19th century. He owned several shopping areas in the Old Town, on the Lipscani street. The Inn was meant both for retail, and to provide accommodation. The Inn is now owned by the Bucharest City Hall, which has paid some RON 37 million – or some EUR 8.3 million for its renovation. Most of the funds came from the City hall, and some EUR 3 million from the Culture Ministry. The existing building was consolidated and renovated, and a new wing was added.

The Gabroveni Inn is located on 84-88 Lipscani St.
