Gandul: New 'Flags Law' agreement to allow regional flags flown at administrative buildings
The leaders of the ruing party the Social Democratic Party PSD and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania UDMR have agreed to have the Flags Law approved by the Parliament, with UDMR planning to submit a legislative proposal, according to Romanian daily Gandul.
This would allow territorial units to fly county or regional flags on their headquarters, which in turn would allow the Hungarian minority display their unofficial Székely Land flag, which caused much debate and heated up Romanian politics back in 2013.
The new Flags Law would be enforced either this year or in the beginning of next year, and is perceived by some as a first step in the autonomy of the Hungarian minority in Romania, another heated topic in the country. Following last year's unofficial flag displays in several localities in the counties of Harghita and Covasna, county prefects went to court against the respective mayors, and some of them already won.
