German retail group Rewe Romania plans to open five new stores under the Penny Market brand in Romania in November.

The company will thus reach a network of 193 stores, including the XXL Mega Discount network.

The new units will be opened in Satu Mare, Tomesti (Iasi county), Bucharest, Buftea, and Oradea. The stores will have areas ranging between almost 1,200 sqm and some 1,400 sqm. The Penny Market network will reach 185 stores following the opening of these five units.

The German group also owns eight XXL Mega Discount stores in Romania. Six of them will become Penny Market units next year.

Rewe sold the Billa Romania supermarket chain to French group Carrefour last year and announced it would focus on developing the Penny Market network.

Penny Market (Rewe Romania SRL), a discount supermarket network that mainly competes with Lidl, had sales of almost EUR 600 million and close to 3,500 employees in 2015.
