How many Romanians shop online and what do they buy?

25 May 2015

Only 31% of Romanians made online purchases in the last year, according to a recent GfK Romania study. In terms of age, those aged under 35 are the most active online buyers.

Although women’s interest for shopping is well-known, things are a little bit different in the online environment, where men are more active. One-third of men said they’ve purchased at least one product or service online, compared to 29% of the surveyed women.

Large cities with over 200,000 inhabitants also lead the ranking when it comes to online shopping.

“Clothes, cosmetics and IT and electronic services and products are the most purchased goods online. We also find household appliances and books in this ranking,” said Andreea Coca, Digital Market Intelligence Consultant GfK Romania.

Romanians also shop online for touristic packages and food (home delivery). On the other hand, few Romanians buy financial packages and goods for current consumption (groceries - sugar, oil, milk, fruit and vegetables, or home care products, detergents, toilet paper) online.

Those who buy online more often choose to pay via digital transactions while those who buy less frequently pay cash. Overall, 90% of those who make online purchases prefer to pay cash, when receiving the order.

GfK Romania carried the study on a sample of 1,000 respondents aged over 15.
