GfK study: Romanians spend EUR 3.7 million on 3D TV sets, sales expected to triple

21 April 2011

Romanians spent EUR 3.7 million last year on 1,400 3D TV sets, while the volume of sales is expected to triple this year, to over 4,200 units, shows a recent GfK study. “Most likely, we can expect a volume of at least three times higher than in 2010 in Romania”, said Ciprian Hatneanu, director with GfK Retail and Technology Romania.

Around 550 3D TV sets were already sold in the first two months of this year, according to the same study. The price of a 3D TV is currently of around EUR 1,700, down from last year, when such as device was priced at some EUR 2,000.

3D TV sets were launched on the Romanian market in 2010. With a global presence in several categories of products such as cameras and TVs, the 3D technology in Romania was promoted exclusively through flat screen TVs. The total market of LCD flat screen televisions and plasma units in Romania was estimated at 480,000 units last year. The only other 3D experience currently available in Romania is that of watching 3D movies in cinemas.
