Google changes logo to celebrate famous Romanian singer Maria Tanase's centennial
Google has dedicated a special logo to renowned Romanian singer Maria Tanase reminding users today (September 25) would have been her 100th birthday.
The new logo (or Doodle) represents Maria Tanase while singing. The first letter of the word “Google” is replaced by the painted face of the Romanian singer, while the first letter “o” represents a microphone.
During the Balkanik music festival organized in Bucharest earlier this month, the Bălănescu Quartet also paid homage to Maria Tanase, playing several songs inspired by her music.
Maria Tanase was born on September 25 1913 and was a famous singer of Romanian traditional music. She was nicknamed Romania’s Edith Piaf and Queen of Romanian folk music.
In 1955, she received the State Prize and in 1957 she was honored with several medals and the title of Honoured Artist of the Republic for her contribution to the art.
She died in 1963 of cancer and was buried at Bellu cemetery in Bucharest.
Over time, other important Romanian artists were celebrated by Google, such as conductor and composer Sergiu Celibadache, sculptor Constantin Brancusi and writer Ion Luca Caragiale.
